Interview: Darkness Into Light 2021

Darkness Into Light is an annual, international 5 km walk organised by Pieta House in Ireland to raise awareness of suicide and self-harm. Launched in Dublin in 2009, it now takes place in over 200 venues across five continents.

Lynda Jacob one of the events organisers in Luxembourg and Alina Hartz a psychologist from KJT joined Sam on the Breakfast Show to discuss the walk, its origins and the organisations that it supports.

Luxembourg will be walking in aid of the Service Information et Prévention of D'Ligue and SOS Détresse - Mir hëllefen iwwer Telefon an online asbl in Luxembourg, KJT as well as Pieta House, Preventing Suicide and Self Harm.

While the walk would normally take place as dawn breaks, allowing the walkers to walk from the darkness of night into the light and symbolically towards all of the hope that a new day brings, this is not possible this year due to covid restrictions and curfews.

Things are a little different this time around, “People can walk at any time of the day, they can walk, jog, run or cycle in aid of Darkness Into Light”, explained Lynda, “here in Luxembourg 10 people can gather together so you can go with friends, family, neighbours, have a walk with your dog… We’re asking people to walk in solidarity with those we’ve tragically lost to suicide and of course those who are currently struggling.”
