Today for our ‘Lost in Music‘ feature we asked listeners to write in to The Breakfast Show with their favourite songs from the movies and TV. Over the course of an hour we received recommendations from the soundtracks of the likes of Coyote Ugly, Narcos, Pulp Fiction, The Wonder Years, Peaky Blinders, The Big Lebowski, The Motorcycle Diaries, The Graduate, The Sopranos, The Umbrella Academy, Friends and more.
There is no doubt that a great soundtrack can do wonders in film and tv. This is by no means a ‘best of’ list but here we’ve gathered some of our favourite instances of great music from iconic scenes in the movies.
1. Elton John’s ‘Tiny Dancer’ in ‘Almost Famous’ (2000)
At the End of ‘Almost Famous‘ the band are at the end fo their teather, depressed and exhausted, everyone is bundled on to the tour bus and as they sit there wallowing in their misery, ‘Tiny Dancer‘ comes on the stereo and ignites their spirits. Soon enough they’re all singing along and we are reminded of the amazing healing power of music.
2. Derek & The Dominos’ ‘Layla’ in Goodfellas (1990)
The crowning glory of Martin Scorsese’s masterful mobster flick is this finale scene that is paired perfectly with the piano outro of Eric Clapton’s 1970 hit love song.
3. Sonny & Cher’s ‘I Got You Babe‘ in ‘Groundhog Day’ (1993)
Sonny & Cher’s 1965 hit I got you babe plays every morning at 6am, waking up an increasingly exasperated Bill Murray and confirming to him that it is ONCE AGAIN Groundog Day in Punxsutawney.
4. Chuck Berry’s ‘You Never Can Tell‘ in ‘Pulp Fiction’ (1994)
Quentin Tarantino’s films are known for their perfectly selected soundtracks. In this scene Mia Wallace played by Uma Thurman and her minder Vincent Vega played by John Travolta iconically get down for the Jackrabbit Slims twist competition whilst trying to ignore the obvious romantic tension between them.
5. Queen’s ‘Bohemian Rhapsody’ in ‘Wayne’s World’ (1992)
This heartwarming and hilarious Freddy-Mercury-approved scene from the opening of Michael Myers’ Wayne’s World isn’t integral to the plot but there is something so endearing about this scene which sees Wayne, Garth and the boys rocking out to Queen in their car that many remember it as the best scene from the movie.
