Cordula Schnuer from Delano was in for the Delano top Of the Week on the Breakfast Show today.
She and Tom discussed the GovSatCom conference that is taking place this week in Luxembourg.
The conference was born out of a public-private-partnership between the Luxembourg state and satellite operator SES, LuxGovSat, founded in 2015. The first edition of the conference was hosted in 2016.
What's on the Agenda at the conference this year?
Defence ministry François Bausch will deliver opening remarks. The head of space and cyber at the department of defence will also be holding a keynote address. There’s a panel discussion on EU and Nato use cases--how do these organisations actually use satellites like GovSat-1. There are also sessions on drones, cybersecurity.
Sponsors (and speakers) include the who’s who of defence and aerospace contractors, such as Leonardo, Thales, Honeywell, Lockheed Martin, Airbus. Interestingly, these five companies are blacklisted by Luxembourg’s pension fund for controversial weapons activities.
Lockheed Martin, for example, delivers arms to Saudi Arabia, which fights in Yemen. Thales uses white phosphorous in the smoke of some of its weapons, which can cause burns, organ damage and can be lethal. It has pledged to phase the substance out by June 2022.
Cordula's three picks for events that are happening included:
