Today on the show Tom and Cordula from Delano discussed the upcoming visit of a delegation from Luxembourg to the closing of the world expo in Dubai.
The delegation, which will include the Grand Duke of Luxembourg and Foreign Minister Jean Asselborn has come under criticism for making the visit amidst Dubai's reluctance to denounce the Russian invasion of Ukraine.
Dubai has come under scrutiny as a safe haven for Russian billionaires. At least 38 businessmen or officials linked to president Vladimir Putin own properties in Dubai. Six of those are under sanctions. The emirate is also a destination for oligarchs to moor their yachts.
Dubai has not frozen any assets or participated in the sanctions regimes adopted by the US, EU and the UK. Other tax havens, like the Cayman Islands, are implementing sanctions.
Despite this, there is a clear interest from Luxembourg to do business with Gulf states. In the context of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine this leads to questions around the kinds of countries Luxembourg does business with.
