Tom's guest in the studio this morning was Julia Dauphinee, who came on the show to discuss the petition she has launched to get a paediatric oncology ward opened in Luxembourg.
Julia's daughter Caroline was diagnosed with brain cancer at the age of twenty months. Upon Caroline being diagnosed, Julia and her husband were told that there wasn't the possibility for her to receive the necessary chemotherapy here in Luxembourg because the infrastructure does not exist here. Instead, Julia and her family were recommended to a ward in Paris and had to take regular car journeys with Caroline in order for her to receive her treatment.
Luxembourg currently does not have a children's chemotherapy ward. Families are reimbursed for the cost of having to travel for treatment but the long journeys can be exhausting and stressful for children who are already undergoing so much.
Now that Caroline is in remission, Julia has decided to launch a petition for a ward to be opened here in Luxembourg so that other families whose children have cancer might have an easier experience than she did after Caroline's diagnosis. She has received support from medical professionals working here in Luxembourg and the petition requires 4500 signatures before it is discussed in front of the Chambre des Deputées.
