Cordula joined Tom on the Breakfast show for Delano's Top Of The Week. Up for discusssion was the recent closure of the maternity ward in Ettelbruck hospital as a result of specialist staff shortages.
Ettelbruck Hospital has temporarily closed down its materninty ward due to the fact that there is no neonatologist currently employed on the ward . Neonatologists specialise in care for ill or prematurely born babies and can provide emergency resuscitation if necessary.
All mothers that were due to give birth in Ettelbruck will be transferred to either CHL Kannerklinik or the maternity ward at Robert Schuman Hospital in Kirchberg,
The lack of specialist doctors can be partly explained by the trend of an aging medical professional population in Luxembourg. Many hospitals will experience large amounts of staff retiring in coming years with an insufficiency in the number of new staff being recruited to replace them. Up until recently Luxembourg did not have a medical programme at the university and so for this reason any Luxembourgish university students would have to travel abroad to study medicine meaning that a lot would remain outside of the country when they began their profession. With the introduction of a Medicine course to the University's syllabus this will hopefully change over time.
