On Local Matters, we have a look on the new Ukrainian community in Luxembourg. Many supporters, volunteers and fellow refugees have organized events and get togethers to have some good time and help each other out.
Sunshine, the birds’ songs, the children’s laughter and them having fun – that’s all Krystina wanted for these Easter holidays, and she got it. On Monday and Sunday, Krystina organized an Easter egg hunt for the children of Ukrainian refugees. “They were having so much fun, the feedback was so nice; it’s just heartwarming.” For the volunteers, it is the fourth shift this weekend. Around 200 families came to search their chocolate eggs, to spend some time in the parc and to let the children forget for a short while what they’d been through in the past two months.
They play soccer and badminton outside, the smaller ones play with toys, the volunteers serve cake, juice, and sweets. To organize all this, Krystina had help from many volunteers and from the public. ”The donations from Luxembourgish locals and expats were huge, new toys, used toys in a perfect condition, eggs, we had contributions for the picnic. It’s so good to see it all.”
While the kids get some distraction and joy, the get to know a tradition. In Ukraine as in most Christian countries, Eastern is an important holiday. But hiding chocolate eggs in the gras, is not traditional. Once they’ve learned how to go for it, they take their white paper bags and run out in the garden to find the hidden treasures.
