Cordula from Delano was in for the Delano Top Of The Week today to talk about the national children's week that was introduced recently by the Luxembourgish Government to raise awareness about early years education.
This week comes at the same time as the government is moving ahead on making afterschool care free of charge for primary school children. It’s doing this with the aim to providing equal access to all families. School lunches will also become free under plans that must still be validated by parliament.
For primary school age children, afterschool care will become free of charge during school weeks. This means that during school holidays, when many parents rely on daycare facilities to keep their kids occupied while they go to work, it will remain fee-paying. Although there are other subsidy programme already in place through the so-called chèques services.
These subsidies are expected come into effect with the start of the next school year but this is pending a vote in parliament. That would need to happen by mid-July before parliament breaks for the summer.
