With two elections coming up in 2023, the biggest parties in Luxembourg politics today (Monday 23/01/23) are signing an agreement on fair elections. Cordula Schnuer from Delano joined Tom on the Breakfast Show this morning to discuss what will be agreed and why it's important for these meetings to take place.
Whenever there’s an election, Luxembourg’s political parties agree on a code of conduct. That includes not damaging or removing campaign posters from other parties, disturbing campaign events, speaking false information, smear campaigns. And they also pledge not to associate with groups supporting their party who conduct themselves in this way.
The first signs of campaigning will begin to be rolled out in Early May however Non-Luxembourgish nationals are reminded that they have until the 17th of April to register to vote in the local elections. This year is the first year that non-nationals that have not yet been in the country for over 5 years can vote. Last week it was reported that so far only 6.7% of eligible non-national voters had registered to vote. Non-national votes could make a big difference in the local elections with non-nationals making up over 70% of the votership in the city centre.
