On Local Matters this week, we focus on the situation of homeless women. Yesterday, we had a visit to the new day care centre in Brussels, recently opened by the ASBL L’Ilot, exclusively for homeless women. Women escaping from the cycle of violence in the streets find a safe space there. Today, we see how things are in Luxembourg. The basic situation is similar. Women living in the streets experience violence and find themselves under constant threat. But although there have been talks about the creation of spaces exclusively for women, so far there are only limited initiatives. Caritas has a night shelter, the Halte de Nuit with ten places, the centre for drug addicts Abrigado offers a weekly afternoon for women only, and Medecins du monde provides medical consultation exclusively for women one afternoon per week. But there is no permanent space and centres for homeless people in Luxembourg are not well enough equipped to accommodate women. In our interview on Local Matters, Alexandra Oxacelay, the director of Stëmm vun der Stroos, tells us more about their situation.
