On Local Matters this week we focus on Islam and Islamophobia. Yesterday, we had Jasmin Jahic in the interview, he is the president of the Observatory of Islamophobia in Luxembourg. We talked about their latest statistic report. Today, I had Yusra on the microphone.
In 2015, Yusra and her husband came from Syria. They crossed Turkey, Greece, Macedonia, Croatia and five more countries before arriving in Luxembourg. Here, she lived in the refugee shelter at Luxexpo in Kirchberg for a few weeks, then had to move to a shelter near Echternach and finally to Differdange. Two and a half years, she spent in the shelters. When she arrived in Luxmebourg, she felt welcome.
Today, Yusra is grateful for everything she has received here. She says she feels like a daughter of Luxmebourg. The country has become her second motherland. During her time in the camps, Yusra started learning French and Luxembourgish. Once she and her husband found an apartment, she started looking for a job and expected the search to be difficult, not only because of the language, but also because she is wearing a headscarf and had heard of people saying this might be an obstacle. In our interview, she explains how it turned out to be.
