In September last year, the midwife practice Lunata in Bertrange launched a new service: they started to perform births in their offices. Shortly after launching this birth centre, the Ministry of health closed it down. There is no legal basis in Luxembourg for such a centre. The law allows women to give birth either in a hospital or at home, not in a commercial birth centre though. Health Minister Paulette Lenert promised to work on the legal side to prepare a law that allows giving birth in a private birth centre. The Lunata case sparked public interest and debate. Behind the scenes however, the topic has been in discussion already before this case and independently. Our guest on Local Matters today is Anne-Laure Metzler. She is a psychotherapist and member of the association Gebuertshaus Letzebuerg Asbl. (Birth house Luxembourg). Since March last year, the association has been lobbying for a legal basis for births in a birth house.
