Alina Manicea joined Tom in the studio this morning to discuss the petition that she is representing, calling for the abolishment of Luxembourg's Tax Category 1a which disproportionately taxes single parents that have been through a divorce.
Single people under tax category 1 pay a higher tax rate than married couples in category 2. After divorcing, people in Luxembourg transferred from tax category 2 to category 1a and required to pay the higher tax rate despite the fact that they may have children to provide for. According to Alina this puts an unfair financial burden on single parents and particularly affects single mothers.
Her petition is calling for equal treatment of single parents as married parents in a country where 1 in 2 marriages ends in divorce, through the abolishment of tax category 1a and single parents maintaining category 2 status after divorce.
Alina's petition is number 2620 and can be found here:

The petition will remain in circulation for 23 more days and (at the time of writing) requires 627 more signatures to be discussed in Parliament.
