Delano's Cordula Schnuer joined Tom in the studio for Delano's Top Of The Week this morning. Up for discussion was the orientation debate on citizen participation in the political decision making process which will be taking place this week in Parliament.
The Green party proposed this debate on citizen participation in political decision-making. The debate will be initiated by François Benoy who is also a Mayoral candidate for Luxembourg City.
Currently citizens in Luxembourg can take part in the political decision making process by presenting petitions to parliament. In order to be considered in parliament a petition needs to receive 4.500 signatures. Alternatively, The government has trialled citizens’ council for a few topics. A group of people was involved in the Luxembourg in Transition project that aimed to re-define spatial planning in the country with a view to becoming more climate friendly. 30 citizens and 5 cross-border workers joined this process. There are also the citizens’ climate council which last year made a series of recommendations to policymakers on protecting the climate. This was composed of 100 citizens.
