Every year, around 1.400 adults learn to write and read with the Education Ministry's department for adult education (SFA). One part of the learners are asylum seekers and migrants who have learned another alphabet in their home country, the other large part consists of people who grew up in Luxembourg. Many of them work without ever having learned how to write and read correctly. On Local Matters, we talk to the SFA about the challenges of teaching basic skills to adults. Françoise Chotro, acting deputy director of the SFA, and Aline Schott, manager for integration and literacy projects within the SFA, explain how they organise the teaching.
The adult education department drafts the learning materials and shares them for free on their website. All associated organisations, teachers and communes use the ministry’s learning materials, but also learners can download the working sheets from the website sfadocs.lu.
