You may have though nepo babies are a recent invention, or at the very least something that came out of the Trump school of politics (or is that Trump university of politics?) but in nepotism has a long and colourful tradition in the Balkans. A fact which Deca Loših Muzičara / Kids of Bad Musicians take a piss out of, starting with the name of the band.
Deca Loših Muzičara or DLM are a funk-rock band that first saw the light of day back in 1988, when Yugoslavia was clearly going to hell in a handcart. A six-member outfit managed to make a mark, however, and started getting local attention with their 1990 debut single, Doživotno osuđen na ljubav
Serbia was not the happiest of most propsperous of places in early 90’s and DLM only released their debut album in 1992. Three years later, they self-produced and released their second album, Prolječni dan / Spring day. The album was met with much approval by the fandom and contained one of DLM’s most iconic tracks, Vlade Divac, dedicated to the legendary Serbian NBA player.
Deca Loših Muzičara released a third album in 1998, but by that time the band’s focus was shifting to from tongue-in-cheek to more serious artwork, as they started writing music for theathre plays and even acting in some of them.
The universe started conspiring against DLM, as economic hardship, car accidents and health issues seriously cracked the integrity of the band. They did manage to release another album in 2005. Titled where the wild Samsungs bloom, it was a return to their sarcastic take on life. But four years lates, Dec
But DLM didn’t disband for long. In December 2011, Deca loših muzičara got back together again and started performing on various stages across Serbia. They re-released some of the material and – as was the custom at the time – recorded unplugged versions of their track and generally started having a good time again.
The lineup of Deca loših muzičara has changed a bit and currently consists of Nenad Petrović, Zoran Živković, Zoran Milivojević, Borislav Veličković, Mihajlo Bogosavljević and Lazar Ilić. The band are said to be working on a new album, due to be released… some time soon.
And that’s all the time we have for today. Check out Deca loših muzičara on YouTube, Spotfy and wherever you get your music from and Balkan Express will be back in three weeks’ time.
