In a heartwarming turn of events, SpaceX's Crew Dragon vehicle successfully docked with the International Space Station (ISS) this past weekend, bringing much-needed relief to two astronauts stranded in space for the past nine months. Butch Wilmore and Suni Williams, who had originally planned for a brief stay at the ISS, were stuck when their Boeing Starliner spacecraft faced technical issues, preventing their return. After several months of waiting, their relief came in the form of SpaceX’s Crew 9 capsule.
The crew’s arrival marks a significant milestone in their journey home. Wilmore and Williams were seen warmly greeting their SpaceX counterparts, with hugs exchanged as the replacement crew arrived. This morning, it was confirmed that the astronauts are now on their way back to Earth.
Their extended stay on the ISS, far longer than the typical six-month rotation, has been challenging. The two astronauts were initially set to return after just a few days, but technical difficulties delayed their departure. Now, with the successful docking of the Crew Dragon, they’re preparing for their journey home, with a splashdown off the coast of Florida expected later tonight.
