Here’s a big win for the planet: in 2024, clean energy powered 40% of the world’s electricity—the highest share since the 1940s! According to the energy thinktank Ember, we can thank wind and solar for most of the rise. They now supply nearly 30% of global electricity on their own. Hydropower also made a comeback after years of drought, and fossil fuels like coal barely grew—so renewables naturally claimed a bigger slice of the pie.
Coal generation even dropped in major economies like the US and China. All signs point to a turning point: we may have already passed the peak of fossil fuel electricity. That’s major.
And how’s Europe doing? Pretty well. In 2023, almost 25% of all energy used in the EU came from renewables, with a 42% target set for 2030. At the current pace, we might actually get there.
Luxembourg, however, has some catching up to do. It ranks last in the EU for overall renewable energy use—just under 12%. But here’s the silver lining: over 50% of Luxembourg’s electricity now comes from renewables, with hydro leading the charge. That’s up nearly 30% in just three years. To fully green its energy mix, the country needs to invest around €8.5 billion by 2030.
