A recent study led in Luxembourg has shed new light on the psychological effects of long COVID. Dr. Charles Benoy, a psychologist and research coordinator at Centre Hospitalier Neuro-Psychiatrique (CHNP) and Rehaklink, helped analyze data from over 1,200 patients across Luxembourg, Switzerland, and Germany. The results show a wide range of mental health impacts, including post-traumatic stress, phobias, and health anxiety. Surprisingly, many patients had severe psychological struggles despite only mild physical symptoms—or vice versa.

Unlike previous research that focused only on depression and anxiety, this study identified specific mental health profiles. Dr. Benoy emphasized that symptoms vary widely, making it essential to tailor treatments to each patient’s personal and social context.

Luxembourg’s clinics have already adapted their approach, offering personalized treatment plans through collaboration between local hospitals. Since 2021, over 2,500 patients have received care, with some fully recovering and others needing long-term support.

While other countries are just beginning to adjust their strategies, Luxembourg stands out for its multidisciplinary care model. However, comparing outcomes internationally remains challenging due to varying living standards and social factors.

The findings stress the need for more holistic healthcare that sees patients beyond their symptoms—looking instead at how illness shapes their daily lives.
