What’s Right: Ingenious Dutch Plan to Refreeze the Arctic

In an inspiring fusion of tradition and innovation, Dutch scientists and engineers are turning to age-old ice rink techniques to address one of our planet's most pressing challenges: the melting Arctic sea ice.

Drawing from their expertise in creating outdoor ice rinks, where water is layered nightly to build thick, skate-ready surfaces, researchers from two Dutch universities and a startup have proposed a method to reinforce Arctic ice. By pumping seawater onto existing ice during the frigid winter months, the water freezes rapidly, forming additional layers that bolster the ice's thickness and resilience against summer melting.

This approach not only strengthens the ice but also enhances the albedo effect—the process by which ice reflects sunlight back into space—thereby helping to cool the planet. Initial tests involve sub-ice pumps delivering approximately 3,400 liters of seawater per minute over areas comparable to two football fields.

Inspired by the Netherlands' "sand motor" technique, which uses ocean currents to distribute sand along coastlines, the team envisions utilizing similar currents to spread the newly formed ice layers. While current operations rely on diesel-powered pumps, the goal is to transition to sustainable energy sources, minimizing environmental impact.

This innovative project exemplifies how blending traditional knowledge with modern science can offer viable solutions to combat climate change.
