A new government-backed study in the Netherlands shows that banning mobile phones and other electronic devices in schools is paying off—especially in secondary education. Since the guidelines took effect in January 2024, about 75% of secondary schools reported improved student focus, 59% saw a more positive school climate, and 28% noted academic gains.
The research gathered feedback from over 600 school leaders and discussions with teachers, students, and parents. The improvements extend beyond attention—students are more social and less likely to engage in online bullying. Especially in secondary schools, nearly two-thirds now ask students to leave phones at home or keep them in lockers.
Even primary schools—where phone use was rare—reported benefits. The takeaways are clear: less distraction, more social safety, and a calmer learning environment. That’s what’s right with the world.
