Yes, museums are open and Mudam’s current William Kentridge exhibition is mesmerising and definitely not to be missed. Lisa headed over to Mudam last night, for the first time in a year! This is her account of the evening…
It felt quite strange to actually be going to meet people; how easily it seems we become hermits. Yet, last night was well worth the initial feeling of social discomfort. As said the exhibition itself was a win, but so too was the event organised by Ons Heemecht; the not-for-profit organises cultural outings between long-time Luxembourg residents, and newcomers, most often refugees. What the evenings offer is an easy way to make people feel welcome, in a country that welcomed many of us when we first arrived. Surely we all have that responsibility, to rise up and make the country we live in the kind of place we would like it to be? And how easily done, with so little effort…all we need to do is turn up.
So a quick recap of why it was a good night out…
First point: fabulous exhibition: More Sweetly Plays the Dance
William Kentridge’s art is anchored in his drawing and encompasses filmed animation, performance, theatre and opera. He moves between mediums and disciplines in a dynamic play of deconstruction and decomposition of visual forms and somehow manages to balance the sense of realism and tragedy with the more primitive human instinct that manifests itself as “joie de vivre”.
Second point: lovely people
Our Luxembourgish guide, a Scot, two Venezuelans, a German and a Cameroonian…so basically TFL….Typical for Luxembourg.
