Minister of Justice Sam Tanson, Minister for Home Affairs Taina Bofferding and Minister for Family Affairs Corinne Cahen, announced recently that foreigners must no longer live in Luxembourg for five years before they can vote in local municipal elections and the time delay to register on the voting lists has been lowered from 87 to 55 days prior to the election.
This change follows a European directive that called for changes Europe wide to reinforce citizen participation. The next local elections will not be held on 11 June 2023, and not in October as is typically the case. The electoral law and the municipality law will be amended accordingly.
Lisa spoke with Justice Minister Sam Tanson to find out more about these changes and whether there was much opposition, and what the individual can influence by using this vote.
