On Local Matters this week, we dive into the topic of men’s tears. Upon growing up, many young men learn to mask their feelings. The image of masculinity, of traditional masculine norms imply suppressing emotions. Crying in this masculine image is perceived as weak, as feminine. Men are supposed to deal with their problems alone, or even to not have problems at all. Scientific research has shown that this rather unnatural ideal causes lots of pressure, internalized stress depression and other mental health issues. All over the world, the suicide rates are higher for cis-gender-men than for women. To admit that one has a problem is often more difficult for men.
The association Infomann supports men in all endeavors, for instance if they are going through divorce, an illness, masculinity, health issues or if they have been victims of domestic violence, the most frequent reason for sessions with Infomann psychologists. Most of their clients however have loads of issues piling up before they finally consider seeking help.
Listen to today’s interview on Local Matters, and if you want to dive deeper into the topic, I highly recommend the documentary “Dans le noir, les hommes pleurent” by French filmmaker Sikou Niakate, available on youtube.
