New York City’s congestion charge, introduced in January, has shown promising results in its early stages. The toll, which charges drivers $9 to enter Manhattan south of Central Park, has led to a reduction of one million vehicles in just six weeks. In addition, travel times have been shortened by 30–50%, while subway and bus ridership has increased.
The goal is to reduce traffic, improve air quality, and encourage more people to use public transport. The revenue generated will be reinvested into transit improvements. However, the toll has sparked controversy. Many drivers, especially those who must commute into the city daily, have voiced their concerns over the cost. President Donald Trump has also criticized the toll, suggesting it harms the economy. Despite the backlash, the toll has found strong support among New Yorkers, with 60% backing its continued implementation.
