Irish-born singer-songwriter John Meehan, now based in Luxembourg, is gearing up for his much-anticipated EP release show on the 29th March at Rocas Bar. In this interview, Meehan reflects on his musical evolution, songwriting process, and the dynamic music scene in Luxembourg.
Having picked up the guitar at 12, Meehan began writing songs in his 20s, drawing inspiration from legends like Elvis Costello and Van Morrison. Though he took a break from songwriting, he returned to it with renewed passion, crafting a collection of deeply personal and stylistically diverse tracks. His music blends elements of folk, blues, and rock, with influences spanning decades.
Meehan described his songwriting process as having evolved significantly over time. Initially focused on structure and imitation, he now writes with more authenticity and emotional depth, often exploring different perspectives beyond his own. His approach to composing has also shifted. Before he wrote lyrics and melodies separately, now they emerge together organically.
His upcoming EP features a mix of styles, and its lead single, Bourgeois Blues, stands out with its lyrics about material wealth failing to bring happiness.
Meehan’s release show will feature an exciting lineup, including support act David Sundorn and a full band of talented Luxembourg-based musicians. With doors opening at 8:30 PM and an entrance fee of €15, it promises to be an unforgettable night of live music. Fans can look forward to the EP’s release on streaming platforms shortly after.
