What’s Right: Climate Tools for Farmers Are Coming Back

Here’s something to smile about: critical climate tools that farmers rely on are finally being restored by the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA). After a years-long legal battle, the USDA has agreed to bring back vital online resources that were taken down during the Trump administration—including the “Climate Risk Viewer,” a tool that helps farmers understand how climate change impacts things like water resources.

The lawsuit that triggered this win was brought by the Northeast Organic Farming Association of New York and two environmental groups. They argued that removing this climate data violated public transparency laws. And the court agreed—because when farmers can’t access accurate data about the weather and growing conditions, it puts food systems and communities at risk.

Thanks to this legal push, the USDA has committed to restoring most of the information within two weeks. That means farmers across the country will soon regain access to tools that help them plan for floods, droughts, and shifting growing seasons.

It’s a victory not just for farmers, but for science, sustainability, and public access to information. One more example of how persistence pays off—and what’s right with the world.
