Since January 1st, Portugal achieved a remarkable feat in its pursuit of sustainable energy. According to data from REN – Redes Energéticas Nacionais, renewable energy sources supplied 82.2% of the country's total electricity consumption.
This impressive figure was largely due to favorable weather conditions, particularly abundant rainfall, which boosted hydroelectric production. Hydropower alone accounted for 41.1% of the electricity generated, while wind energy contributed 27.3%. Solar and biomass sources also played their parts, with solar energy's share increasing thanks to consistent growth in installed capacity.
The surge in renewable energy production not only reduced reliance on fossil fuels but also had significant environmental benefits. In the first four months of the year, renewable energy generation prevented the emission of approximately four million tonnes of carbon dioxide equivalent.
Portugal's commitment to renewable energy places it among the leading nations in Europe for clean energy adoption. With a goal to generate 85% of its electricity from renewables by 2030 and achieve carbon neutrality by 2045, the country is well on its way to a sustainable future.
This achievement underscores the potential of renewable energy and serves as an inspiring example of what's right with the world.
