It’s St David’s Day so to celebrate the Welsh national day, we played a whole load of our (and your) favourite Welsh bands on the Breakfast Show this morning. Here are 5 of our favourite Welsh bands? Who did we miss?
Catatonia:
The band from Cardiff are regulars on the Freshly Squeezed playlist, mainly because Road Rage was the original “Ear Worm” track that kept getting requested to wind up a listener, (Morning Juggsy), but Cerys Matthews and pals have a back catalogue that’s well worth digging in to.
Stereophonics:
Stereophonics are they really they anyone’s FAVOURITE band? Like does anyone LOVE them? But at the same time, is there another band that you don’t really like that much but you also know all the words to loads of their songs? See them live and any apprehension you may have had about them not being “cool” goes out the window. They are hit machines who know how to put on a show and at least half of the room probably fancies frontman Kelly Jones.
Feeder:
Newport rockers Feeder are another band who have manage to stand the test of time. Formed in 1994 and still going strong. Their most recent, and tenth, album Tallulah, released in 2019 was hailed in Kerrang as being "busy with songs that fizz with life and the kind of choruses that exist in a glorious, endless summer". Which is exactly how one could describe Feeder generally. Made for festivals, hearing their songs can take you out the lockdown gloom and transport you to a field, in the sun with a beer in hand or all over you once that chorus in Buck Rogers hits!
Manic Street Preachers:
When the Manics released their debut album Generation Terrorist back in 1992 they declared that they would become the greatest rock band of all time, sell 16 million records and then retire. Well 30-odd years later and they’re almost there. Over 10 millions albums sold, a back catalogue to rival anyones and an army of devoted fans who would say they’re already the best band ever.
Goldie Lookin’ Chain:
Laugh out loud lyrics, genuinely brilliant beats, thick Welsh accents, what’s not to like? The comedy hip/hop collective from Newport have been going since the early 00’s and while their most recent material may have drifted under the radar, the songs that made them famous, Guns Don’t Kill People Rappers Do, Soap Bar, You’re Missus Is A Nutter etc, still work as well as they did the day they were released. Seeeerious!
That’s 5 of our favourites but who did we miss?
