Leading a very normal life as a beloved only child in Damascus, at 14 years old, war started to crowd into Salwa’s peaceful existence. Moving with her parents a number of times to safer areas of the city, eventually her parents decided that the safest option was for Salwa to leave Syria and join her aunt in a safe haven in Lebanon. When her aunt left Lebanon for Europe, Salwa returned to her parents in Damascus, and from there she decided to pursue a scholarship in Europe. This took her to Hungary to learn Hungarian. As war continued, rather than return to Damascus, Salwa decided to seek asylum in Luxembourg. As we celebrate the Festival des Migrations this week, hear her story, her regrets, her challenges and her aspirations.
