The most hotly contested and prestigious song contest in all of music* anywhere took another step closer to crowning a winner today as ten songs became five ahead of tomorrow’s final.
In what was surely the upset of the competition Junior Senior’s Move Your feet was swept aside by relative young gun Olly Murs in brutal fashion. The X Factor alumnus putting aside any Jedward related distractions to ease in to the final with his upbeat track Wrapped Up ft Travie McCoy.
Next up MGMT’s Kids went head to head against Sweden’s Galantis and their track Peanut Butter Jelly. The electronic duo’s upbeat track looked like it might be about to pull off another upset before the American veterans dug deep, secured the votes they needed and eased their way in to the final five.
Newsreader Simon’s nomination Raise Your Glass by Pink was seen by many as an early favourite but when the draw was made and the 00’s pop icon was put up against French DJ Bob Sinclar and his 2005 hit Love Generation, worry filled the newsroom. The summer party vibe of Sinclar’s track, coupled with the better weather and the recent reopening of terraces in Luxembourg had Pink worried but in truth she needn’t have worried. Raise Your Glass was co-written by hit machine Max Martin and once you know that then there was only going to be one winner.
In the penultimate matchup, the Trigger’s broom of pop, The Sugababes, went in to their matchup with Meghan Trainor as slight favourites. So often in Fridayvision history “older” = better but Meghan proved that she’s about more than that bass to destroy her opponents and install herself as one of the new favourites to take the title in tomorrow’s showpiece.
The last game of the semi-finals saw office party favourite “Uptown Funk” by Bruno Mars up against Festival favourite Go With The Flow by Queens Of The Stone Age. Bruno swaggered in to the competition sure that his universal appeal and slick dance moves would see him coast to the final but a hard hitting performance from Josh Homme and co proved too much for the solo singer to handle. In a sometimes brutal encounter, QOTSA proved that sometimes just throwing it in to the mixer and going for it can excite the crowd. It seems people have just had enough of Bruno but will QOTSA have enough to win the day in the final?
Whatever happens tomorrow, George Benson will relinquish his title and a new FridayVision champion will be crowned. Tune in to the Breakfast Show tomorrow morning from 7am to have your say in who takes the most coveted title in music.**
