Passerell Works to Protect Human Rights

Passerell  is a not for profit organisation working in Luxembourg to support the human rights of asylum seekers and refugees. Passerell is a small team of legal practitioners who work with other  lawyers in the country who are willing to work pro bono on the various cases.

Lisa spoke to Ambre Schultz a permanent member of the team about the work the organisation normally does, and the work they are doing now supporting Afghan refugees and asylum seekers.

MORE ON THE WORK OF PASSERELL asbl

In November 2020, Passerell filed an appeal to the administrative court against a practice of the Directorate of Immigration causing, according to the association, fundamental rights violations, by refusing the registration of applications for international protection.

An unusual initiative, this action, prepared and carried out by the voluntary lawyers of the association, follows a response from the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Immigration and Asylum to a parliamentary question. In his response, Minister Asselborn denies refusing the registration of applications for international protection, which Passerell criticizes in particular. On the other hand, the Minister fully acknowledges that his services can inform an asylum seeker that his request has "no chance of succeeding" even before the registration of the request and therefore before any individual analysis of the situation at hand.
