Yesterday, the new prison Ueschterhaff was inaugurated. 400 people can be detained there. It is built for prisoners on remand, those who are waiting for their trial and have not been convicted yet. In front of the new prison, a dozen people joined to protest against this new opening, the four associations Richtung22, Eran, eraus an elo, Rise and Second chance oppose to the opening of this new prison.
In 2020, according to the Council of Europe, 45 percent of prisoners in Luxembourg were on remand, this percentage is the highest in the EU.
The prison Ueschterhaff near the national penitentiary centre Schrassig has been built to improve the detention conditions for the detainees.625 prisoners are in Schrassig at the moment. 250 of them, those on remand, are now transferred to Ueschterhaff.
The activists in front of the prison have a clear message though: More places in prison are created to detain more people.
