In the US-state of New York, the juvenile crime rate dropped by 86% following the closure of doyens of youth prisons. Fostering alternative sentences such as community service, the system lowers the chances of reoffending.

For Local Matters, we’ve been to the inauguration of the new prison Ueschterhaff. 400 people can be detained there. It is built for prisoners on remand, those who are waiting for their trial and have not been convicted yet.
