Duncan Roberts of Delano, joined Tom in the studio this morning for the final Delano Top of The Week of 2022. They looked back over the year and discussed some of the stories that might be featuring heavily in the news in 2023.
2022's biggest story was the invasion of Ukraine by Russia. Like many countries, Luxembourg saw the arrival of a wave of refugees that came here fleeing the conflict. Individuals, families and organisations like L'Ukraine and have put a huge effort into welcoming those arrivals and helping them to integrate into society but a number of barriers such as language difficulties have meant that it is often hard for te ukrainian refugees to find work here.
The war in the Ukraine had a huge affect on the economy of many countries. With no end to the conflict in sight, there is a lot of uncertainty going into 2023 about how the repercussions of the war will continue to be felt in Luxembourg and other nations.
In politics, Luxembourg saw the appointment of four new cabinet ministers in 2022 (Yuirko Backes in finance, Joelle Welfring in environment, Georges Engel at employment and Claude Haagen at agriculture). This was also the year that Paulette Lenert was appointed deputy prime minister and gained widespread popularity, consistently topping opinion polls. 2023 will see the local and national elections in Luxembourg with foreign nationals being able to vote in the local elections in June.
Duncan's event picks for the week include:
Monday 19.12 – comedy at Rocas
Wednesday 21.12 – Luxembourg Music Awards at Rockhal
Wednesday 21.12 – Queer Christmas Party at centre Cigale
And his personal pick was a track 'I wish it was Christmas today by Julian Casablancas'.
This was also Duncan's final Top of the Week with us as he is leaving Delano in the new year. We wish him all the best with his future endeavors and hope to have him back on the show in some other guise soon!
