What’s Not to Love LuxFilmFest 2021


While you would be forgiven for being sceptical about a of Film Festival going ahead in the middle of a pandemic, your scepticism would be misplaced and quickly dispelled when considering this year’s Luxembourg City Film Festival line-up that features established stars Pedro Almodóvar, William Friedkin, Frances McDormand  and Tilda Swinton.  Now in its 11th year, the  Luxembourg City Film Festival goes from strength to strength and you can expect 11 days of fantastic movies. The festival team is calling it a hybrid festival, we call it genius; the festival will take place physically in theatres, but it is also possible to buy an online pass to watch at home.

Something as monumental as a pandemic was not going to stop artistic director Alexis  Juncosa in his quest for the best. The result is plethora of feature films and interesting documentaries.  Alexis stopped by the Radio ARA studio to share his enthusiasm over the programme and his interview with Lisa can be heard here or at the link below.

The festival Starting on the 4th of March, with Director Chloé Zhao’s Oscar frontrunner Nomadland.  Starring Frances McDormand, this feature-documentary follows the  modern-day nomads who wander around the United States seeking part-time work.

This year the team pays homage to two distinguished directors. American, William Friedkin, will receive the festival’s lifetime achievement award. An the retrospective of Friedkin’s work features  The French Connection, Killer Joe and  The Exorcist.  The second is  a retrospective of director (and former Monty Python member) Terry Gilliam, a number of his most  memorable films such as Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas,  Brazil and 12 Monkeys will be screened.

What’s a Film Festival without a competition?

Eight international films are on the shortlist for the best feature award, including  ones from Angola, Mexico, Bosnia-Herzegovina and Russia.

The documentary competition includes six films, two from South America.  Once Upon A Time In Venezuela examines local politics as a village is threatened environmental disaster. The Mole Agent from Chile is a moving film about a spy in a retirement home.
